Air Jordan 1 Royal Returns 10 October With Flight Guy Box

Michael Jordan never played a game in the Royal. No Bulls colours, no on-court history, no famous moment attached to it. By the usual measures it should be a footnote.

Instead it is one of the most recognised Air Jordan 1 colourways ever made, and the reason is a photograph.

Air Jordan 1 Retro 'Royal'
Style code: IQ5495-005
Colourway: Black/Game Royal-White
Release date: 10 October 2026

Black Leather, Varsity Royal, and a Bit More Texture

The 2026 pair uses the standard High OG build rather than the '85 shape. That was an open question for months, since the Royal was widely rumoured to be the colourway that would get Jordan Brand's 1985 reconstruction. It did not, so the proportions here are the ones most people already own.

Black leather runs through the base, with Varsity Royal on the toe box, the Swooshes, the ankle and the heel. The blue leather carries more texture than the 2017 version did, and it shows most around the collar and the back of the shoe. That is a small change and an easy one to miss in photographs, but it is the difference between a flat panel and one that catches light.

White midsoles and Royal Blue outsoles finish it, exactly where anyone who knows this shoe expects them to be. Nothing has been reinterpreted. This is the Royal, roughly a decade after the last one.

The Photograph That Made It

In 1985 Nike sent the photographer Chuck Kuhn to Oregon to shoot Jordan. He turned up wearing the Royal rather than a black and red pair tied to Chicago, which at the time would have been the obvious choice.

One frame from that session, Jordan standing on an open road, became the poster people now call Flight Guy. It did more for the Royal than any game ever could have, and it is why the colourway sits alongside Bred and Chicago in most people's heads despite never touching a court.

Jordan Brand has gone back to that shoot for the 2026 packaging. The road photograph runs across the outside of the box, with more images from the same session inside. Special boxes are usually a way of dressing up a thin release. Here it is the opposite, the box is the story the shoe has always been about.

Air Jordan 1 Royal Release Date

The Air Jordan 1 Retro 'Royal' releases on 10 October 2026 through Jordan Brand retailers and Nike, in adult sizing. The style code is IQ5495-005 and the colourway is listed as Black/Game Royal-White.

Royal pairs have a habit of moving quickly and then staying expensive, and a decade between releases does not help supply. If you missed the last one, this is the first real chance since.

The Air Jordan 1 Retro 'Royal' is already live on KLEKT ahead of the release. Keep an eye on the page as pairs start to appear, or list yours if you get one on the day.

The two pairs worth putting next to it are the Air Jordan 1 Retro High 'Royal Blue' (2017), the last time this colourway came back, and the Air Jordan 1 High 'Reimagined Royal' (2023), which put the same colours on the aged Reimagined build. Line all three up and you can see exactly what the 2026 pair is going back to.
