For more than 20 years, Michael Jordan dominated the world of basketball. After joining the Chicago Bulls in 1984, Jordan would go on to win six NBA Championships and countless accolades. His career is still one of the most talked-about in NBA history, and for good reason. Of course, his athletic talent isn’t the only thing that is discussed. Just as important as Jordan’s legacy in basketball are his sneakers, three of which are now set to auction at Christie’s.
Officially called “Original Air: Michael Jordan Game-Worn and Player Exclusive Sneaker Rarities,” the auction will see a Nike Air Ship, Air Jordan 7 and Air Jordan 14 all up for auction. In Christie’s own words, it is “offering the most comprehensive sneaker record of Michael Jordan’s era-defining Chicago Bulls career.” As you would probably expect, this auction is already making a lot of noise in the sneaker community.
Jordan’s first shoes on the court as a Bull were the Nike Air Ship. The precursor to the Air Jordan 1, the Nike Air Ship was on Jordan’s feet as a rookie. Sporting a red and white leather upper, the Air Ship was the original “banned sneaker.” As you can probably imagine, this piece of history isn’t going to be cheap. This particular sneaker is expected to fetch anywhere between $350,000 to $550,000.
The second sneaker on offer is the Air Jordan 7 “Olympic” from 1992. Worn during the Dream Team’s match up against Croatia, this is one of the few game-worn pairs in the world. Again, getting your hands on these won’t be cheap (or easy). Christie’s estimates that the Air Jordan 7 “Olympic” will sell for between $50,000 and $70,000.
Finally, the Air Jordan 14 “Chicago” is also up for offer. The sports car-inspired silhouette was made famous during 1998 season when the Bulls secured a second threepeat. Worn by Jordan during practice games, the rare colourway is one of the most desired in Jordan history. No estimates have been given on price, but you can expect these to sell for a lot.
