There are few living artists on the planet who are as widely respected as Daniel Arsham. The 39-year-old contemporary artist has gained fans such as Usher, James Franco and Pharrell Williams over the past decade. His collaborations with Dior and adidas have seen him thrust into the limelight of pop culture. In keeping with the pop culture theme, Arsham has taken to Instagram to reveal that a collaboration with Pokémon is on the way.
Though details are slim, the upcoming collection continues Arsham’s concept of “future archaeology.” Arsham has reimagined the Pokémon logo using quartz and selenite. Dubbed “Relics of Kanto Through Time” the collection will focus on creating future relics. The concept focuses on creating artefacts that will be found 1,000 years in the future. For Arsham, this theme runs throughout the entirety of his work. This latest project is no different. In an interview, Arsham explained that:
“Fictional archaeology is really an idea of taking all of the objects from our present-day and imagining as if we were an archaeologist in the future and looking at these objects from our everyday life. I think there’s something kind of prolific and impactful about trying to step outside of our own time frame. I hope to be able to kind of shift people’s understanding of time in general.”
Though details on the upcoming collaboration are slim, you can expect this to launch sometime soon. For now, you’ll have to appreciate the images of what’s to come below.
