Football-inspired sneakers are having a moment thanks to the World Cup, but few releases capture the spirit of the game quite like the latest collaboration between Basketcase and New Balance. Following the success of their previous projects, the Los Angeles-based label is back with a fresh take on the New Balance Gator Run, inspired by the model’s roots in football culture.
Dubbed ‘The Alternates’, the collection introduces two colourways: ‘Hacky’ and ‘Maiden’. Rather than focusing on star players or specific teams, the ‘Alternates’ project celebrates the colourful, creative, unconventional characters who often become cult heroes both on and off the pitch. It's a concept that perfectly aligns with Basketcase's DIY approach to fashion and storytelling.
The standout ‘Hacky’ colourway is impossible to ignore. Vibrant yellow side panels are paired with shaggy green suede overlays designed to resemble a worn football pitch, while braided rope laces, gum soles, and playful badge details add to the handcrafted feel.
Meanwhile, the ‘Maiden’ colourway takes a more understated route. Deep burgundy suede combines with pale blue underlays and cream accents, creating a softer, more refined interpretation of the Gator Run silhouette. It's still packed with texture and personality, but feels easier to slot into everyday rotations.
Both pairs build on the Gator Run's football heritage. Originally inspired by New Balance's 1982 Gator turf shoe, the modern silhouette combines low-profile football aesthetics with contemporary comfort, making it one of the brand's most interesting new models. Basketcase elevates that formula through textured materials, split “BASKET” and “CASE" branding and star motifs on the heels, and custom lace options.
The New Balance x Basketcase Gator Run ‘Alternates’ pack was released via Basketcase on 12 June, ahead of a wider launch through New Balance planned for 19 June.
