Fresh off a string of high-profile collaborations, New Balance is taking its newest silhouette in an entirely different direction with the New Balance 1890A. Blending moccasin-inspired craftsmanship with performance running technology, it's one of the Boston brand’s most unique looks following the 1906L sneaker/loafer hybrid.
At first glance, the 1890A feels like a departure from the standard 1890. The technical runner has been reworked with an elevated moc-toe construction, replacing the familiar layered mesh upper with smooth leather and hand-sewn apron stitching. The result sits somewhere between a Wallabee, a performance runner, and a lifestyle sneaker.
The launch colourway, the ‘Morel Snakeskin’, takes its name from the earthy mushroom-inspired palette that covers the upper. Pale yellow leather forms the base, while textured snakeskin-print overlays in shades of brown, grey, and black wrap around the mudguard and heel, letting the unique upper stand out even further. A black tongue label, matching ABZORB midsole, and understated embroidered ‘N’ logo keep the look surprisingly refined despite its exotic materials.
Underfoot, things become a little more familiar. Rather than introducing an all-new platform, New Balance equips the 1890A with the same ABZORB-loaded tooling found on the standard 1890, delivering the comfort and everyday wearability the model has quickly become known for. It's an interesting past-meets-future concept: classic moccasin styling on top, modern running technology underneath.
The New Balance 1890A 'Morel Snakeskin' is set to release on 3 July 2026. More neutral colourways are expected to follow, but this snakeskin look is the perfect opening statement for this eccentric hybrid model.
