In Japanese fashion, there are few figures who are as widely respected as Junya Watanabe. The Tokyo born designer, who is the protégé of Comme Des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo, is considering a founding father of Japanese menswear. After launching his own eponymous label under CDG in the early 90s, Watanabe has cemented himself as one of the leading names in global fashion, regularly showing at Paris Fashion Week and earning a considerable amount of attention in the process.

The Japanese menswear giant is also known for his work in the sneaker community, collaborating with the likes of Nike, Converse and New Balance; the latter of which he is about to drop a simple take on one of the Boston sportswear brands most iconic silhouettes.

Whilst it may not be the most colourful of kicks, less is always more when it comes to Japanese fashion. Using the familiar monochromatic colour scheme of his Comme Des Garçons owned sub-brand, Watanabe has created a sneaker that is perfect for any season. A familiar combination of white, grey and black is emphasised through the use of luxurious materials such as suede, leather and the traditional mesh.

The neutral colour scheme allows the shoe to make a statement without having to say too much. A white midsole helps to create a perfect divider between the upper and sole; bringing a sense of uniformity to the sneaker. In keeping with this premium shoe, Watanabe has opted for the “Made in England” option for the New Balance 1500, topping off a well crafted and designed sneaker.

As New Balance 1500s go, this is certainly going to be one to remember for the rest of 2020.
