When it comes to dad shoes, there is only one sneaker that can be called the original; the New Balance 990. Originally debuting in 1982, the 990 has since become a cult classic. “Worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio” one of New Balance’s ads once read; a statement that has remained true to this day. It looks as though the forerunner to dad shoes is getting a red hot update, however, with a new colourway that is eye-catching, to say the least.
Using the 990v5 as the model of choice, the latest version of the chunky silhouette is already setting the sneaker world alight. New Balance’s premium material choices of pig suede and breathable mesh make a return, making this shoe worth every penny. A combination of red hues across the upper are well-balanced through the use of a darker red heel cage and laces; similar to that seen on Joey FreshGoods upcoming pair of 992s.
The familiar white ENCAP midsole makes a return, but with a red streak throughout. A gum sole helps to merge this dad shoe together and rounds off the 990 off nicely. With this being a “Made in USA” release, NB has made sure that every detail of this sneaker is perfect. New Balance’s familiar American flag branding can be seen on the tongue, with 990v5 on the lace loop.
For now, this is a US release only. However, given the only growing popularity of the New Balance 990v5, you can expect these to get a wider release soon.
