It is safe to say that 2020 was one of the most memorable years on record. Brands around the world showed their support for the Black community following on from the senseless killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement that followed throughout the rest of the year. Of course, sneakerheads will know that brands have been releasing Black History Month sneakers for a number of years now. Now, New Balance is back with its 2021 collection titled “My Story Matters”.
Taking the iconic New Balance 574 and 990v5, the sneakers take inspiration from a core institution in the Black community: the church. A vibrant purple hue pays homage to the purple robes worn by many gospel choirs every Sunday. Burgundy, light grey and black accents create a nice balance to the sneaker, with the pairs each telling a story. According to Chavon Cham, Senior Product Manager for Lifestyle Apparel at New Balance:
“We wanted to create a collection that celebrates the power of Black stories, both in name and design. ‘My Story Matters’ drives home the core truth that every Black story has value and deserves a chance to be heard.”
Launching alongside a full apparel collection, you can expect the New Balance “My Story Matters” collection to drop on February 15th. Check out the full images below and let us know which pair is your favourite.
