Supreme is no stranger to collaborating with artists. From Damien Hirst to Futura and Jackson Pollock to Rammellzee, the New York streetwear behemoth has had its fair share of collabs. Being able to follow on from a collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto is tough, yet somehow Supreme has managed to do it with its Joel-Peter Witkin collection. As one of the more unusual artist collabs that Supreme has had, Witkin’s work is certainly divisive, much like the pieces on offer.
Known for his dark themed work, Joel-Peter Witkin’s art focuses on rather morbid themes. Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Witkin’s dark art can be traced back to a single event in his childhood. Having watched a fatal accident which saw a girl decapitated in the mid-1950s, Witkin began exploring the darker side of life and death. He became obsessed with news clippings about outcasts and illness people as well as the performers of Coney Island.
Some of Witkin’s most famous art pieces include Sanitarium which Alexander McQueen referenced in his SS01 show. Whilst this collaboration may not be for everyone, it has certainly intrigued fans of Witkin and Supreme’s artist capsule collections. In total just three pieces will release; a T-shirt, Long Sleeve Tee and Hoodie. Each piece will feature a famous Witkin piece on the front or back, with the Hoodie dropping in five colours and the remaining items in six.
