The History
The ASICS Gel-Kayano line began in 1993, created by designer Toshikazu Kayano. ASICS was investing heavily in biomechanical research at the time, and the Kayano series was built to be the brand's most stable, premium long-distance running shoe. Each new model reflected Kayano's design thinking, often inspired by organic forms, architecture and even cars.
By the time the Gel-Kayano 14 launched in 2008, the line was well established. What made the 14 special was that it was the first Kayano not designed by Toshikazu Kayano himself. The job went to Hidenori Yamashita, who built the design around the idea of "flash": the moment a runner's heel strikes and the foot pushes off through the toes.
The 14 leaned fully into late-2000s performance design. The upper used layered synthetic overlays, open mesh and sharp lines for structure and breathability. Underfoot it packed ASICS' best tech of the time: GEL cushioning in the heel and forefoot and the Trusstic System for stability and torsional support. This was a serious running shoe for overpronators and long distances.
It performed well, but it arrived just as running shoes were getting more minimal. ASICS moved towards sleeker designs, and the 14 quietly disappeared into the archive.
The Revival
By the late 2010s, sneaker culture had come full circle. The chunky runner, once dismissed as dated, was suddenly everywhere, and the rise of Y2K fashion put silhouettes like the Kayano 14 back in the spotlight.
At the end of 2020, ASICS SportStyle brought the Gel-Kayano 14 back as a lifestyle model, starting with the UB1-S releases such as the 'Classic Red' and 'Piedmont Grey'. Kiko Kostadinov, whose partnership with ASICS had already moved the brand into fashion, is credited with pushing for the 14 to return. ASICS kept the original proportions and the layered leather and mesh look rather than modernising the shoe.

The timing was perfect. The metallic accents, open mesh and complex panelling sat right alongside the Nike Vomero 5 and New Balance 1906R, while offering a more understated, archival feel. Silver, cream and grey colourways like the 'White Pure Silver Slate Grey Sage', 'Black Pure Silver' and 'Cream Black Metallic Plum' became the backbone of the line.
The Collabs
The boom really took off with JJJJound. The Montreal studio's first Gel-Kayano 14 dropped in August 2022 in muted silver tones, the 'Metallic Silver Black' and the 'Metallic Silver White', which already has its page on KLEKT. Both sold out instantly, and the hype spilled over to every in-line pair. JJJJound returned in 2025 with the 'Light Blue' and 'Midnight'.
In 2023 the Seoul label UNAFFECTED followed with three pairs, the 'Posy Green', 'Bright White' and 'Dark Shadow', each with layered colour blocking that gave the 14 a fresh look.

Now
Today the Gel-Kayano 14 is one of ASICS' most recognisable and in-demand silhouettes. Recent drops have pushed the colour range far beyond silver: the gold, silver and bronze 'Olympic Medals' in 2024, the 'Tiffany', 'Papaya' and 'Silver Lime' in 2025, and the 'Cream Pistachio', 'Ivory Cream' and 'Carrier Grey Black' in 2026.
What makes the Kayano 14 last is its authenticity. This is not a shoe designed to look technical. It is technical. The layered build, visible GEL and purposeful details all come from a time when performance decided the design.
