COMME des GARÇONS is without a doubt one of the most important fashion brands in the world. Since it’s inception in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, CDG has amassed a loyal following whilst never changing what the brand is. Its collaborations with Supreme, Louis Vuitton and Levi’s have introduced it to a diverse audience. Now, COMME des GARÇONS is teaming up with its favoured sneaker manufacturer Nike once more.
For over 20 years, COMME des GARÇONS and Nike have merged haute couture design with everyday functionality. The latest instalment in the relationship sees CDG take on one of Nike’s earliest and most pioneering silhouettes: the Waffle Racer.
Using CDG’s favoured black palette, the waffle racer is given a sleek redesign. After launching the CDG x Nike Air Max 95 earlier this month, the same material construction has been applied to the Waffle Racer. A suede upper replaces the traditional nylon found across the toe box and side panels; with a suede heel and mudguard adding to the minimalistic approach.
Perhaps the most eye-catching detail about this sneaker, however, is the Swoosh. Constructed with black denim, the Swoosh has frayed edges throughout; making a subtle statement by defacing one of the world’s most instantly recognisable logos. An all-black midsole and outsole round the shoe off, with a large white “CDG” logo on the heel, the only clue as to who designed the sneaker.
After being reimagined by Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™ last year, the Waffle Racer has made a significant comeback in the world of sneakers. You can expect the CDG x Nike Waffle racer to launch sometime during the SS20 season.
