When images of the Studio FY7 x New Balance 992 were first shared online, NB fans around the world knew they had to cop a pair. With 2020 undoubtedly being the year of New Balance, the collaboration was another tick in the box for sneakerheads. First debuted by Studio FY7 founder, Younes Bendjima, this 992 colourway is arguably one of the best we’ve seen this year. However, the inspiration for the shoe is one that you might not think of first, if at all.
Revealed by Younes Bendjima on Instagram, he explained that the Studio FY7 x New Balance 992 was inspired by his native country of Algeria. The unlikely source of inspiration, however, has been detailed perfectly:
“The suede outer shoe serves as a reflection of the colouration and curvature of the dunes of southern Algeria, which is contrasted by black circular cutaways that symbolize the ancient architecture of Ghardaïa – which heavily influenced the work of Le Corbusier. The shoe is a reminder that no matter where you walk in the world, you can, and should, be proud to carry your history and heritage wherever you go.”
As you can see, this 992 is bigger than the materials it is made out of. For Bendjima, the collaboration is an opportunity to showcase the pride of his Algerian roots. We for one, can’t wait to see what these look like in hand. Launching exclusively on Studio FY7 on October 22nd, these are going to be a tough cop. With the luxury fabrics and slick story, you can see why. Check out the images below and let us know if you’ll cop these New Balance 992s.
