One of streetwear’s favourite new brands is Awake NY. Founded in 2012, the brand has continuously created collections that personify what New York street style is. In its own words “Awake NY evokes both the changing aesthetic vibrancy and timelessness of New York.” All of that is evident in its latest collaboration with one of America’s oldest apparel companies; Carhartt.
The collection feels completely natural, something that is not easy to achieve given the calibre of both brands. Carhartt’s speciality in creating functional workwear pieces has been given a playful twist by Awake NY. In total, 12 pieces have been reworked to combine powerful streetwear aesthetic with everyday practicality.
Awake NY has taken some of Carhartt’s most well-respected pieces and elevated them through subtle changes. Carhartt’s Michigan Coat, one of the brand’s most iconic pieces, uses colour blocking to bring it into the 21st Century. Three Michigan Coats have been made in three equally as eye-catching colourways; Blue/Orange, Brown/Blue and Black/Pink. All of these jackets feature a large Awake NY x Carhartt graphic on the back; though there is no doubt who this collaboration is by.
Heavy-duty hoodies are also releasing using the same colour schemes as the jackets. Although the colour blocking is missing, the focus is on the colourful stitching on each hoodies cuffs and hood. Beanies also have the same colour treatment, with a simple Awake NY x Carhartt graphic sewn onto the front. Finally, three-pocket T-shirts are also releasing to top off a well-balanced collection.
