It is hard to imagine what the world of sports would look like without the Los Angeles Lakers. Since its inception in 1947 (originally the Minneapolis Lakers), the dynasty has become one of the most formidable forces in basketball. Some of the games greatest players have hooped for the Lakers including Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neill and, of course, the late Kobe Bryant. Since his passing, a number of brands have cancelled tribute items, with Jordan Brand being the latest to do so.
During his famous sneaker free agency season 2002/2003, Kobe was spotted in everything from Air Jordans to Reeboks. Having received four PEs from Jordan Brand, the Mamba began one of the most memorable years in basketball sneakers. In Kobe’s final season at the lakers, he was issued a special Air Jordan pack featuring an Air Jordan 3 and Air Jordan 8. It was one of the final PEs that Kobe received from Jordan Brand.
Originally set to launch in November 2020, the Air Jordan 3 “Lakers” was almost identical to the black iteration made for Kobe. However, given the untimely passing of one of basketballs greatest players, it seems the decision to launch the Jordan 3 has been cancelled. Whilst this may not come as a surprise, it is certainly the right thing to do. However, some sneakerheads are debating if the colourway is truly for Lakers.
Unlikely Kobe’s PE Air Jordan 3, this sneaker does not feature the yellow of the Lakers. In fact, the royal purple accents are contrasted by orange detailing on the tongue. This has led many to believe that these could be made for the Phoneix Suns. Of course, the close link between the two colourways may have led Jordan Brand to pull the release altogether.
It seems this sneaker has been cancelled before it’s even had the chance to start. Whatever your thoughts on the matter, this is the right decision to make. Check out the images below and let us know if you would cop these Lakers inspired Air Jordan 3s.
