Sustainability is becoming an ever-important part of everyday life. In the UK, 52% of the average persons carbon footprint comes from the products that they consume. Both businesses and consumers are much more aware of the impact they have on the planet. Brands such as Levi’s, adidas and Nike are all making a conscious effort to go green. Thankfully, Nike may have just unveiled its most eco-friendly sneakers yet.
Dubbed the “Space Hippie” collection, Nike has created four sneakers that boast radical designs; each comprised using waste and excess materials from factories. In Nike’s own words: “every detail of the four initial Space Hippie silhouettes, from material choices to methods to make packaging, was chosen with consideration for its environmental impact.”
Each of the four shoes is made using the same sustainable methods. A knitted upper, 100% recycled yarns and merged together with other elements to create an upper that is made from 90% recycled material. The cushioning is made from factory scraps of the Vaporfly 4%, repurposing the ZoomX Foam and using half the CO2 emissions as typical Nike foams.
Our favourite part, however, is the midsole and sole. Dubbed “Crater Foam”, Nike’s midsole is a blend of standard Nike foams and 15% Nike Grind Rubber. The chunky midsole has a unique colour due to its recycled elements; with the excess Nike Grind Rubber being visible throughout.
Though there is no set release date on these sustainable sneakers, you can expect them to release soon.
