Virgil Abloh 1980 – 2021
In celebration of Virgil Abloh. Arguably the industry’s most influential designer. He leaves behind a vast legacy with Off-White, his work for Louis Vuitton and his expansive collaborative work. Vigil’s disruptive boundary-breaking approach subverted and challenged everything we knew and know, about fashion and culture. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family.
In fashion, fewer brands have had as meteoric a rise as Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™. Since it’s inception in 2013, Off-White™ has become a staple brand in the luxury streetwear space. Collaborations with the likes of Moncler, Umbro and, of course, Nike has helped it to become one of the most respected brands on the planet. Now, for the third successive quarter, Off-White™ has officially been named as the hottest brand in the world.
Although the luxury fashion industry has taken a big hit, Off-White™ has comfortably remained at the top. This is thanks to items such as its facemasks which, given the current climate, have sold out globally. Collaborations with the likes of Jordan Brand, as well as a stellar Paris Fashion Week show have also helped.
Narrowly missing out on first place was Balenciaga, with Demna Gvasalia’s influence shining through. The brand rather aptly debuted an “end of the world” FW20 show has helped it climb to second. For the first time, however, Nike rose to number three on the list, beating Kering’s golden child Gucci. Of course, with Kering announcing a large financial drop in Q1 due to the coronavirus, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Some new names have also entered the Lyst top 20 this year in the form of Jacquemus, Raf Simons, Thom Browne and Rick Owens. Familiar faces such as Givenchy, Prada, Stone Island and Verace Interestingly, Nike is the only athletic brand that makes this list, showcasing the power of the Swoosh.
